Children Under 19 in Fair or Poor Health

Select a County

This indicator shows the percentage of children under 19 in fair or poor overall health as reported by a parent or guardian.

Why is this important?

Childhood is an important time for growth and development — and a child’s experiences, behaviors, and health problems can have long-term impacts (Healthy People 2030). While most children are reported to be in excellent or very good health, about 1 million (1.5%) of children were reported to be in poor or fair health (Health Resources and Services Administration).

Considerations for Equitable Approaches: The percent of children reported to be in excellent or very good health increased with household income. By race and ethnicity, Non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Native and non-Hispanic Black children were least likely to be in excellent or very good health (Health Resources and Services Administration). Ensuring children can engage in positive health behaviors, receive developmental screenings, and access to health care and needed social supports can help to improve health outcomes for children (Healthy People 2030).
